Quadratic - completing the square

Completing the square is a technique to solve Quadratic Equation.
Key questions to ask when using this technique are:
  • What is Completing the Square technique?
  • Why do we use Completing the Square?
  • When is it used?
  • How is the Completing the Square technique applied?
The following resources will be used to aid your understanding of the topic on Completing the Square.

Algebra Change of Subject 2

In the previous lesson, you have uncovered the implication of 'change of subject' and the processes involved.

Task 1
collaborative work

using TI-Nspire to

build your foundation on the key concept using examples presented in a collaborative environment.

========================================================
Task 2
Pair work

based on the activity in task 1, reflect on the processes involved and write it down on your worksheet 5.
Identify at least 2 points for consideration for 'Change of Subject'.
You may discuss with a partner in class.
Submit this at the end of the lesson.

Task 3
individual work

Extension of understanding on Change of Subject

Identify a formula in other subject areas (other than Mathematics)
- define which subject area the formula is applied and what the formula is about
- define all the variables used
- identify a variable (other than the one presented) to make a subject.
(ensure that this is possible)
[post this as a comment - do not include your solution[

example:
Subject: Physics
This formula is about the motion (movement) of an object
v = u + as
v - final velocity
u - initial velocity
a - acceleration of object
s - displacement
Question:
Make a the subject of the formula.

Algebra Change of Subject

Sometimes we will need to rearrange a formula to find the value of a subject.

For instance, we may know the area of a circle and need to find the radius. To do this, rearrange the formula to make the radius the subject.

Changing the subject of a Formula

The area of a circle (A) is pi r2

So A = pi r2

If we know the radius, it is easy to find the area using this formula. However, if we know the area and want to find the radius, rearrange the formula to make 'r' the subject.

A = pir2

[Start by dividing both sides by pi]

a over pi - r to the power of 2

[Then take the square root of both sides]

square root of A over pi = r or square root of A over pi

Task 1:

You are given 7 minutes to view the following video.

Go through the process of changing subject

Task 2:

You are given 10 minutes to review the introduction and the worked example from worksheet 5.

v = u + at
